Awful Auntie 2

Birmingham Stage Company Ltd.

Neal Foster and Richard J. Hinds

A revisit of the show Awful Auntie this time working with Richard J. Hinds to create a set which would reflect the constant movement of the actors through Saxby Hall. I created a set of two levels, the ground level of 'stone' rising to the upper level of decorative railings and staircases. Together with Richard (Movement director and Choreographer) the set consisted of two structures which revolved around a central static entrance. This enabled us to position the pieces to suggest various rooms in the house and to rotate the pieces in a choreographed sequence to the wonderful music of Jak Poore. The actors constantly travelled through the set before it stopped rotating at a particular room. The surround of the set is a series of printed blue panels and cyc which reflect the cold winter landscape and the floor was a marble which doubled up as the icy lake at the front of Saxby Hall. Working with Yvonne Stone the wonderful puppet of Wagner creates the fifth character on stage and there are moments outside of Saxby Hall where the actors operate miniature versions of themselves to assist the story telling.

Wagner (puppet designer and maker Yvonne Stone) and Auntie admire the cakes on the trolley on their way to the dining room.
